Cuba in black and white, the past of film photography
From Santiago de Cuba to Havana, a journey of more than 1,000 kilometers through time.
Trinidad, a small town in the center of the country, attracts many tourists with its cobblestone streets and art galleries. Here, an old Cuban man worthy of being a member of the Buena Vista Social Club. © Sébastien Roux
In an orange sky, the sun slowly sets over the tarmac of Toussaint Louverture Airport in Port-au-Prince. I crossed the Mallepasse border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. One island, two worlds. My article on the evolution of child protection since the 2010 earthquake will be published soon. In the meantime, onward to Cuba.
Cuba the fearless, Cuba the invincible, Cuba the indescribable. A country full of paradoxes, an unrealistic fantasy, a dive into a gilded poverty. And if traveling alone removes all points of reference, I find it difficult to distinguish sincerity from opportunism throughout my many fascinating encounters. Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, Santa Clara, Sagua, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Havana: a visual record of this east-to-west crossing.
This series of photographs was taken in April 2018 using a Canon AV-1 film camera.
