A Mexican Odyssey
Episode 1 – First Breath in Mexico
Faced with a bad-tempered customs officer, this journey could have gotten off to a rough start… Mexico City Airport, Monday, February 11, 2020. I’m about to travel through southern Mexico for two months, a ten-kilo backpack on my shoulders. After meeting up with my friend Alex, I spend my first day exploring the Centro Histórico of this sprawling capital.
Episode 2 – The Fervor of Lucha Libre
It’s been less than 24 hours since I arrived in Mexico City. I discover lucha libre—halfway between sport and theater—by heading to Arena México. Before that, I meet photographer Jeoffrey Guillemard, who had just spent several days documenting the daily life of “El Gallo Francés.” Then it’s my turn to meet “Lady Drago” in a gym on the outskirts of the capital during a training session.
Episode 3 – Rise and Fall of Empires
In this episode, I explore several neighborhoods of the capital (Condesa and Roma) before setting off to discover the former pre-Hispanic empire of Teotihuacán, as well as Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Episode 4 – Gaining Altitude in Puebla
In the state of Puebla, I plan to gain altitude and immerse myself in nature. First stop: Cholula, a small artistic, trendy, and colorful town. Then I begin the ascent to the summit of La Malinche at 4,420 meters above sea level. Finally, I explore Cuetzalan, a colonial village where I attend the danza de los voladores.
